If someone didn't know better, they'd think she was an apprentice. True, Mothfoot is a fresh warrior, but it's more than just her age and small stature. It's the way she carries herself. She slinks along, body low and narrow, paw in front of paw. It's almost as if Mothfoot is trying to maker herself a smaller, less noticeable target. Even when she sits, it's the same: paws tucked, tail wrapped tightly, shoulders hunched over. As if being small means that every other cat won't notice her.
Her pelt contributes to this effort. Dark brown with strong tabby marks on her face, chest, and tail, Mothfoot blends into the shadowy pines of ShadowClan territory for the most part. Pale grey fur paints her muzzle and paws, drawing attention to both her dark nose and white whiskers. Mothfoot's wide eyes are a sharp hazel color; olive green with a splash of orange tint for good measure.
PERSONALITY
Much like her namesake, Mothfoot is prone to blending into the background. The young she-cat often spends her time in the shade of the warriors’ den, out of the way, simply watching. She pays special attention to the body language of her clan mates; the sweep of a tail, the twitch of a whisker, can reveal so much more than mere words. Mothfoot has had plenty of practice from her days as a kit and apprentice with this skill, and finds it easy to read emotions from at least some of the cats in her clan.
But sensitive to others emotions as she is, Mothfoot still has difficulty approaching others on her own. She does nothing to put herself out there, other than sometimes quietly volunteering for a border patrol. Though she rarely stutters and stumbles over her words, Mothfoot takes extra care to think before she speaks, and long pauses are common before she responds to a conversation.
Despite this, Mothfoot is not a cold-hearted cat. Quite the contrary, she enjoys helping others around the clan, doing odd jobs here and there on top of patrols. Although she’s been a warrior for a couple of moons now, she still thinks of herself as more of an apprentice than anything else. Mothfoot hopes that she’ll be able to comfortably grow into her role as a warrior soon. As a general rule, Mothfoot tends to put others before herself.
‘Spirited’ is not a word that most cats would use to describe Mothfoot, unless they knew her well. Briarfang, her mentor, discovered this after five moons of training. Though shy and caring, Mothfoot is not someone that can be walked all over. When pushed to do something that goes completely against her values, Mothfoot will take a stand for herself. It takes a lot of bravery for the warrior to accomplish this, and so it's not a trait that many cats realize she possesses. Just as well; Mothfoot isn't one to draw attention to herself.
There is one trait that affirms Mothfoot was born in ShadowClan. Though she doesn’t care to admit it, the young warrior can be just as sly as the next. She finds it easy to lie, especially because of her close attention to her own and other’s body language.
Living under the scrutiny of her mentor, father, and mother hasn't been easy for Mothfoot. While no longer under their watchful eye, the young she-cat has retained the feeling that she's not a good enough hunter or fighter. Mothfoot doesn't excel at these skills, but is far from a failure. Despite this reasoning, she's quick to blame and criticize herself when things go wrong. Not that anyone would know this unless she told them; Mothfoot hates dumping her problems on others and instead prefers to keep her feelings to herself.

HISTORY
This is a tale that starts with two cats: Hazeltail, the proud she-cat, and Ashclaw, the serious tom. It seemed strange that the two would end up together; they had matching iron wills that clashed often. But what isn’t important is why it happened. It’s that it did.
This pairing brought two kits into the world. First born was Smokekit, an exact replica of his father. The tom was soon followed by Mothkit, named for her dark pelt which reminded her mother of the moths that so easily blended into the pines.
From birth it was obvious that the kits were different. Smokekit was loud, brutish, and bossy; his favorite hobby was pushing Mothkit around when Hazeltail wasn’t looking. On the other hand, Mothkit was shy and warm hearted, but slow to interact with the other kits in the nursery. Instead of playing with them, Mothkit would often sit to the side and simply watch them.
Ashclaw and Hazeltail were proud of how Smokekit was turning out, but were concerned about Mothkit. They wanted both of their kits to become fearsome warriors, but Mothkit’s personality didn’t seem to fit the bill for them. When Mothkit was five moons old, Ashclaw spoke to his brother Briarfang. Briarfang sympathized with Ashclaw’s situation, and requested he mentor Mothkit himself when she was of age.
Another moon later, Mothkit and Smokekit were both apprenticed; the newly named Mothpaw was apprenticed to Briarfang, whereas Smokepaw was partnered with a she-cat named Maplefur. Smokepaw was jealous of Mothpaw and made no effort to hide it. He had wanted Briarfang as a mentor. Mothpaw, however, was glad to be away from Smokepaw for a while. The two hardly saw each other during the day, both busy with their training.
Briarfang was a strict mentor, pushing Mothpaw to become stronger, faster, fiercer. Though she completed the tasks set in front of her well enough, it was never good enough for Briarfang. He changed tactics halfway through their training- instead of pushing her to be something she wasn’t, the older tom tried to play to her strengths. He noticed her uncanny ability to move silently and taught her sneak attacks, how to hide in the shadows, how to disguise her scent by rolling in plants. These she excelled at, though she wasn’t particularly proud of it. For Briarfang, it was enough.
His final test for her came when Mothpaw turned eleven moons old. He led her to the Thunderpath, where ShadowClan met ThunderClan. The task was simple enough. A sparrow fluttered down, just beyond their reach, into ThunderClan territory.
“The ThunderClan patrol just passed by earlier. It will be safe for now. Go catch it.”
“…What?”
Mothpaw was stunned. Her mentor was ordering her across the border. It went against everything he had taught her. Briarfang waited impatiently.
“You heard me.”
“….No.”
It had taken a lot of strength on Mothpaw’s part to refuse her mentor. She squeezed her eyes shut, expecting Briarfang to cuff her with one of his giant paws. But no such blow came.
“Good. You have spirit. I was afraid I was raising an apprentice without a backbone.”
Mothpaw opened her eyes in disbelief, just as Briarfang turned to head back towards the ShadowClan camp. She leapt to her feet and rushed after him, unable to contain the burning question she had.
“Briarfang? What if I did go after the sparrow?”
“I wouldn't have let you.” He growled in response. Mothpaw let it go after that, glad she had made the right choice.
A moon later she received her warrior name: Mothfoot, for how silently she moved through the forest. Her brother received his at the same time: Smokestare, for his intimidating gaze. As they sat together during their silent vigil that night, Mothfoot could almost feel waves of resentment rolling off of him. Without knowing why he had grown to dislike her, Mothfoot began avoiding him as much as possible during her duties as a warrior.
