Breezepaw had been told to wait.
She hated waiting.
It was so boring! Why should she wait when she could be doing something exciting, like hunting or running or playing or something? She had only just been named an apprentice, but her mentor had told her to wait for them. Just for a little while, they had promised. But a little while was starting to turn into forever, at least in Breezepaw's mind.
She kneaded her paws on the ground outside of the apprentice's den. Whatever her mentor was doing, it was taking far too long for her tastes. She jumped up suddenly, looking around. A smudge of movement in the corner of her eye caused her to turn and pounce at whoever her unfortunate victim was.
"POUNCE!" She announced as she landed, tail flicking excitedly and yellow eyes a-glow with mischief and fun.

Mintpaw had just been named an apprentice and had been hiding in the apprentice den ever since. Unlike Breezepaw, who was nothing but excited about the new opportunities, Mintpaw was nervous and uncomfortable with her new position in the clan. They should have just stuck her in the elder den and never given her a warrior name, maybe they could give her an elder name, like Notail or something. It would have been more appropriate. Mintpaw was a quiet cat, soft spoken, quiet steps and always eager to learn things… but never eager to fight.
Lost in her own little world Mintpaw yowled in misery as she was launched upon by her sister, who could have been a badger for all Mintpaw had noticed. Her momentary terror quickly subsided and she tried to fight off her larger and more well-prepared-to-be-a-warrior sister. “Oh get off of me Breezepaw, you giant lump of fur! I’m not a mouse!” she yowled and squirmed some more pawing at her sibling’s face, claws sheathed of course.

Breezepaw only just noticed who she was pouncing on: her sister. She knew she was nervous about being an apprentice now - and just about everything else, it seemed like - and then she had just pounced her while taking her unawares.
Oops.
"I'm not that giant!" Breezepaw mewed indignantly as she took the blow to the face and clambered off of her sister. She got into a playful crouch. "Come on, let's play before our mentors get back! It'll make waiting less boring!" She exclaimed. She couldn't wait to actually go and do apprentice things, like hunting and patrolling and battle training and all the rest. Then again, she could hardly wait for anything. Her yellow eyes glowed with excitement as she tried to infect her sister with the same energy. She hoped she would go! It wouldn't be the same without her.

Mintpaw eyed her sister with an indignant glare before licking her white paw and swiping over and around her smoky colored ear to fix the fur messed up by Breezeki- er… Breezepaw. It was weird to say their apprentice names now… though even the shy Mintpaw felt a little pride, she didn’t feel like a baby anymore. She was growing up! But wait… was it all happening too fast? She tried not to think about that and turned her eyes back to Breezepaw. “No way, you’ll just wear yourself out then go trumpeting through the heather like a rabbit dog and scare everything away.” She retorted but the comment wasn’t intended to be rude of mean, it was just intended to be teasing. Mintpaw knew her sister was thicker skinned and could take a little friendly teasing.
Though she had to admit it was a lovely day and she had been sleeping for a long time… and their mentors were taking a while. It wouldn’t hurt to make the time go faster would it? Mintpaw’s little bobbed tail started twitching in anticipation but she contained herself and didn’t show any other signs. In one swift movement Mintpaw launched at her sister, batting at her whiskers a few times with a light of play in her large eyes, before dashing off as fast as she could only to trip and tumble straight ingot the clan’s wall of brambles. “ow…” She whined and started trying to untangle herself… She needed more balance but without her tail…

"I would not!" Breezepaw mewed in response to her sister's teasing. She twitched her whiskers in amusement as she retorted, "I'm more sneaky than you!" She wasn't sure how true that was - she had never liked being quiet and stealthy when she could just make sudden movements and surprise her opponent. But she'd have to learn to be sneaky if she wanted to hunt - prey wouldn't just sit and wait to be pounced on like her siblings or her mother had. So I will be sneaky! She told herself confidently.
With moons of experience, Breezepaw could see that her sister warming to the idea of play. She was ready for her lunge, and though half of her face ended up cuffed, she avoided the worst of the "attack." She bounded after her as she raced away, and saw her tumble into the bramble wall. Breezepaw slowed down just enough to stop next to her sister.
"Wait, stop for a second," She instructed, looking at the brambles to assess the situation. She was fairly tangled, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. She lifted one of the thicker brambles. "Back out slowly, Mint. I'll lift the brambles." She told her, ready to help as best she could. Hopefully they wouldn't have to go see Barkface or Cinderfoot for any injuries. If they were careful, it should be okay. She hoped.

Mintpaw paused as her sister spoke then nodded and managed to wheedle her way out of the prickly wall, “I’m alright… Just clumsy.” She laughed and shook out her fur sending the occasional twig and branch flying from her pelt. “Oh mouse dung I had just finished cleaning my fur and now look at it! I look like I fell into the gorge and over the falls!” She mewled. Mintpaw wasn’t the neediest of cats but it did put her own when she had just groomed herself for an hour, only to have it ruined minutes later… What would her mother say? She’d probably get scolded. Promptly the little cat sat her rump on the ground and started trying to undo the mess the brambles had made of her, “Least I didn’t get a thorn in my eye.” She commented and shook out her fur once more… this grooming was useless and so she gave up…. She’d just have to be a fuzzy white and grey ball for the rest of the day.
“See told you playing here was a bad idea.” She whined a bit then looked around, “Our mentors must be in a really important meeting with someone important if they’re not here yet. Maybe they’re in the leader’s den.” She said glancing over in that direction. A leader… how noble a thing! They never messed up, they were never wrong- At least not in the eyes of an adoring kit of their clan they weren’t. Mintpaw’s whiskers twitched in fascination, what was it like to die and be brought back? Was there anything that could kill a leader in one blow? She certainly hoped not. “What do you want to be when you grow up Breezepaw? Are you happy with just being a warrior?” She asked, figuring she already knew the answer.

Breezepaw let out a sigh once she had sniffed her sister and confirmed for herself that she was okay. She wasn't going to let her get hurt again. Not only because she was family, but because it was her fault she didn't have her tail. She hadn't told this to anyone, but she couldn't shake her guilt, not fully at least.
She purred with amusement at her sister's comments. "It's not my fault you look like a hedgehog now!" She replied teasingly. Mintpaw was a more sensitive kit than Breezepaw was, but they had a relationship that allowed for a bit of teasing back and forth. Besides, it might make her stop complaining about her fur. She didn't want her to start talking like Mousedapple, always concerned with the state of her pelt. She sounded silly for a warrior.
At Mintpaw's suggestion that their mentors were talking with the WindClan leader, Mothstar, she looked toward the den as well. "What if they are talking to Mothstar? I wonder what they're talking about. I wanna know!" She looked curiously toward the den, her mind half-way made up to go and visit Mothstar's den. Before she could move, however, Mintpaw distracted her with her question.
“What do you want to be when you grow up Breezepaw? Are you happy with just being a warrior?”
Breezepaw's yellow eyes had a confused look about them as she tilted her head. "Well, yeah. I'm going to be a great warrior for WindClan - I can't imagine anything better. What are you thinking about Mintpaw? Do you not want to be a warrior?" Suddenly, Breezepaw felt nervous. Barkface already has an apprentice! What else would Mintpaw do? She couldn't imagine going anywhere without her sister. They were warrior apprentices together, with their brother Stonepaw. They were going to be great warriors, together.

Mintpaw wrinkled her nose at her sister playfully, “I don’t look like a hedgehog!” she meowed in a mock-mewling tone, though a soft laugh was lining her words, obviously she hadn’t been insulted. “If I was a hedgehog you’d be full of quills! You’re always rolling onto me at night.” She purred in bubbly amusement as she batted the air between them in a half-hearted mock-strike.
“Don’t even think about it! Mothstar doesn’t need two little kits running around his den bothering him!” Mintpaw mewed rolling her green eyes at her silly sister… Just imagine the irritation on Mothstar’s face if he found them messing up his den! Oh boy what was the furry of a leader like?! Mintpaw didn’t think she wanted to know.
“No no no I ment do you want to be a deputy, or a leader, someday?” She asked clarifying herself, trying to take the topic of conversation off of her and back onto her sister. No one needed to know that Mintpaw wanted to be a medicine cat, no one needed to know she had little self confidence and that she would never make a good warrior. Mintpaw already knew she had to serve her clan, had to be a good warrior and make her family proud… Wouldn’t it just be easier to run away and become a kitty-pet? What was wrong with being a kitty-pet anyway? They got free food, and their two-legs were nice to them, not like the two-legs that would come romping through the forest. The more she thought about it the more she didn’t like the idea though. After all she would have to leave her family and friends behind… but as she being selfish thinking that way? Wouldn’t it be easier if they didn’t have to protect her? Well… they wouldn’t have to protect her if she could protect herself. Mintpaw almost broke into laughter at the thought. Her? Protect herself? HA! It was laughable. Completely abandoning her mental argument with herself she focused her eyes on Breezepaw waiting for the answer.

"Do not!" Breezepaw reared up on her hindlegs in a playfully threatening stance as her sister spoke about how she rolled over her. She wondered for a moment if that was true, but dismissed it. Mintpaw wouldn't sleep in a nest next to her if she did that, and besides, they had slept together before with Mousefoot. It couldn't be that much worse.
"We're not kits anymore," Breezepaw pointed out, but she saw the sense in what her sister was suggesting - about not going in, that is. Mothstar might not be too happy. He was a nice leader, but she didn't want to ruffle his fur too much. Maybe I'll go explore later. I've always wondered what Mothstar's den looked like. She thought to herself, contemplating the idea curiously. It was hard to talk her out of an idea once she had one.
At Mintpaw's question, Breezepaw flicked her tail thoughtfully. Deputy, or leader? She hadn't thought about it all that much - her mind was usually filled with playing and having fun, at least until recently. She had definitely thought about being a warrior, and couldn't wait for that! Being a queen might not be so bad either, if that happened in the future. But being deputy or Clan leader? She hadn't really thought that far ahead. But now that Mintpaw mentioned it, it did sound promising.
"Breezestar. That does sound pretty good!" Breezepaw mewed finally, clearly interested by the idea. She bounced on her front paws. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath Tall Rock for a meeting of our Clan!" She pronounced, strutting around her sister importantly, doing her best to imitate Mothstar, and mrrow-ing in amusement. For the moment, she was fully distracted from any thought of Mintpaw's ambitions.

“Do too.” Mintpaw retorted but laughed it off and arched her back in mock-aggression, though her fur still lay flat and she stuck her soft pink tongue out at her litter-mate. Though really Mintpaw didn’t mind being rolled on, it was something her siblings used to do to her when they all slept together. Stonepaw liked his space now that he was older but the girls were still more than happy to sleep side by side, their fur touching and keeping each other warm.
“I suppose that’s true, but we’re not grown-ups yet either.” Mintpaw reminded her sister, after all they were still barely half the size of their adult counter parts. In fact Mintpaw was less than half sized, she would get long slim legs and a beautiful lithe build that would make her look very graceful, but for now her larger paws, stubby tail and awkward gate made her a klutzy little thing. The thought occupied the white and grey she-cat’s mine for a little bit, how would the family look when they grew up? Would stonepaw be strong like his father? Would Mintpaw and Breezepaw look like their mother? Or would they be a little mix of them both? The whole scenario perplexed her, but she was a patient cat and could wait to see what she looked like in a few moons time.
Suddenly when her sister spoke again Mintpaw giggled a happy bubbly giggle, “Long live Breezestar!!” She mewed excitedly; they weren’t adults just yet, so it was ok to play pretend still. “Who will you name as your loyal deputy oh great Breezestar?” She chirped feeling silly, but happy, “I suggest the noble Stone- Stone-… What do you think Stonepaw’s warrior name will be?” She asked pausing their game momentarily tracking her sister’s proud struts with a slight tilt of her head. .

"Do not!" Breezepaw retorted again, dropping back down on all four paws and sticking her own tongue out at her littermate. She wasn't the kind to give up on an argument, even if it was all meant in playfulness. She liked to win, no matter what it was that she was winning at. It was the reason she loved racing - not only did she feel like she was flying, but she was a fast runner, so she often won.
"No," Breezepaw agreed reluctantly. But she brightened quickly. "But I'll be the strongest and fastest in WindClan, you'll see!" She promised, puffing out her chest to try and make herself seem bigger and more imposing. She wasn't an imposing figure to begin with, and puffing out her chest certainly wasn't going to fix anything, not any time soon. But she wanted to be strong for her Clan, and so she would work hard to fulfill her dream. She wanted to be a great warrior period. Maybe they'll tell kits to be like me someday! The thought warmed her heart and lifted her tail high.
She purred as her sister played along with her, and she kept her "noble" stance, strutting confidently. Breezestar... It does have a nice ring to it! She thought, flicking her tail eagerly.
"My deputy? Well, why not you, Mintpaw? You could be, be... Mintflower!" She declared. "I bet Stonepaw will be Stoneface, since he's so boring." She purred in amusement. She and her brother were close, but they had an on-going "feud" where Stonepaw would try to convince her to follow the rules rather than having fun, an idea that Breezepaw obviously disagreed with. She always told him he should just be an elder, and she would have fun being a warrior for him. But she really loved her brother, and appreciated his calm words of advice when she didn't know what to do.

“do too.” Mintpaw said again, she was a patient cat and enjoyed watching her sister argue about silly things and so often kept the ‘fight’ going whenever they started something. Soon they wouldn’t even remember what they were fighting about but that was alright. It was still fun.
“I bet you will be.” Mintpaw purred, sure her sister was immature and small now, but she had long legs and a good work ethic, so why couldn’t she become the best? Anything was possible. Mintpaw looked her sister over, that confidence would certainly get her far in this life. Breezestar… what would it be like if that were to actually happen? How amazing would that be?! Well as long as Breezepaw matured a little, of course.
“Me? A deputy?” Mintpaw seemed shocked but then giggled, “Ok, I’ll do my best to serve my clan!” she mewed and tried to look brave, but even though this was pretend the thought of that position terrified her and she tried not to let it show. “Mintflower, that’s very pretty. I think I like that.” The little cat purred suddenly feeling a bit more pretty herself, could she really be compared to a flower? Then the mention of Stonepaw’s name came up and Mint’flower’ laughed, “Oh that really does suit him! He needs to smile more!” She giggled, they’d both get their ears batted if he heard them talking like this but oh well, he wasn’t there. .

"Do not!" Breezepaw insisted. She really wasn't going to drop this. She was determined, the same way she had been determined to catch her rabbit even after she had been chased by a badger. She had seen it and wanted to catch it, but her parents had brought her and her siblings back to camp. They were well in their rights, of course, with Mintpaw being hurt. But she still felt miffed when she saw a warrior bring a rabbit - the same rabbit, she told every cat - back to camp. I could have caught that rabbit. She had thought. She was over it now, mostly, but she had a kind of stubbornness that she found hard to dismiss.
She purred at her sister, grateful for her words. She may be quiet and a little shy, but she was always kind and encouraging. She had the best friend in all the Clans with her, and she hoped they would never lose that. They would be great warriors - they would always have each other's back, as well as their Clanmates.
Breezepaw nodded, clearly pleased with her choice. She could tell Mintpaw was a little uncomfortable with the idea, but she went along with it anyway, as she usually did. Breezepaw always appreciated her sister's willingness. It made their adventures a lot more fun. She liked having her siblings with her whenever she did anything. It wasn't that she couldn't do things by herself, but she preferred not to, not when she had such good friends in her siblings that would accompany her.
"Yep! He can be kind of a mouse brain sometimes. But he's still a good and loyal warrior in WindClan!" She declared. "Now we'll have to defend ourselves from ShadowClan." She nodded seriously. "Mintflower, are you ready to lead a patrol?" She asked.
They weren't actually going to leave camp. Maybe. Probably. Hmmm...

“Do too” Mintpaw mewed patiently licking her soft white paws casually as if the conversation was not bothering her… which of course it wasn’t. Mintpaw was a patient cat, but that wasn’t even coming into play here, she just loved to watch her sister be stubborn… well, only when it wasn’t in bad situations like sneaking out, or hunting on patrols or… well generally breaking the rules. Mintpaw would constantly try everything to prevent her sister from making a fool of them, but it was never any use. The only thing Mintpaw could do was go with Breezepaw and make sure nothing bad happened in the end… even if that meant getting herself in trouble too.
“After all, what cat tries harder, works harder or trains harder than you do, Breezepaw?” Mintpaw asked, “The more you try the more likely you are to succeed. At least that’s what mama says.” The little grey-spotted she cat purred, she loved her mother and her mother was always right. Or so Mintpaw thought. Mothers always knew best! It was like some gift from starclan that mothers just got smarter all of a sudden. Mintpaw kind of thought that that would be a lovely thing to be, a mother. To have kits and look after them and love them. The more she thought about it the more she liked the idea… but she would give it up to be a Med Cat, then the whole clan would be under her wings!
Mintpaw nodded, “I think Stonepaw will be a wonderful warrior. Brave and loyal and strong. He’d make a great mentor one day.” She said then thought about it, “Even if he is a bit of a stick in the mud.” She added remembering how naggy her brother could get.
Suddenly the game was back on and since it was pretend Mint’flower’ could pretend to be brave. There was nothing hard about looking brave, but actually being brave? Well, that was a story for another time. “I am indeed Breezestar! We will strike first and we will be victorious! The wind will carry our prayers to starclan and starclan will help us!” Mint’flower’ purred and purred out her soft white chest and held her grey-spotted chin high in the air, ears flat in mock battle-stance.

"Do not!" Breezepaw continued to insist, bouncing on her forepaws eagerly.
Breezepaw nodded in agreement with Mintpaw. Her mother was smart. She wasn't as exciting as Breezepaw liked things to be, but she really loved her mother. She was kind and caring and she loved her. They were a close family, even with her older sister Nettlespots, who was a warrior already. "I will try my best!" She promised. She wanted to be the best that she could be, and hopefully that would pay off. She would work to beat the other apprentices.
"I'm sure he will! He is strong." She commented, remembering their play fights in the nursery. He would be a good warrior, the kind that WindClan could be proud of. Even if he was kind of boring sometimesshe was super that he was going to be a great warrior someday. Just like me!
Breeze'star' nodded approvingly. "May StarClan guide your paws!" She finished with a giggle. She was distracted soon, however, by movement near the edge of the apprentice's den. She started creeping toward it, taking on her best stalking crouch that she knew thus far as she padded toward it.
